Nuclear Science and Technology Education Competition for Secondary Level Students and Teachers

1- Overview 

Nuclear Science and Technology (NST) plays a significant role in the achievement of many of the UN Sustainable Developmental Goals, especially in health, food availability, energy and the environment, and contributes directly to 9 of the 17 UN SDGs. IAEA TC Project RAS0079 overall objective is to expand and sustain nuclear science and technology information, education and communication among secondary school students and teachers in the region. RAS0079 which started in 2018 has and continue to pave the way through science teachers in engaging secondary students to be introduced to NST to ensure the sustainability of Human Resources in the region towards achieving the UN SDGs.

This competition is open to Member States who are participating in the TC Project RAS0079. It aims to promote creative thinking from students on how they see the role of NST in food security and in human health to meet the SDGs after being exposed to the NST topic in classroom or via extracurricular activities. It also aims to promote innovative teaching modules in the areas of NST for secondary level education that engages students with WOW factor.

Winners of this competition will be provided with the opportunity for a week study tour to IAEA Headquarters in Vienna in Spring 2022 and visit IAEA facilities and laboratories.

 

2- Competition Details

2-1 Secondary students’ Competition 

  • Students’ testimonials through video presentation on how they view the role of NST to contribute to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals in one of these thematic areas: Food Security or Human Health.
  • Details of Participation
    • Sole or a team (maximum of 2 person) of secondary high (between 17 – 19 years old) school students in Asia and the Pacific region
    • Create a short video maximum of 3-5 minutes long on role of NST to contribute to UN SDG. It can be in the form of a documentary, short story, music video, animation, and the like
    • Submission should be in English with all Q&A in English
  • Entries will be judged based on the following
    • Sole or a team (maximum of 2 person) of secondary high (between 17 – 19 years old) school students in Asia and the Pacific region
    • Impact (20%) – the video should have a powerful effect on the target audience
    • Relevance (30%) – The video must be relevant to the UN SDGs
    • Creativity and Originality (30%) – The video must be original and visually stimulating

2-2 Secondary teachers’ Competition

  • Teacher to demonstrate an effective online teaching method that would raise student’s interest and motivation to learn nuclear applications in Biology, Chemistry or Physics subject
  • Details of Participation
    • Sole or a team (maximum of 2 person) of secondary science teachers in Asia and the Pacific region
    • Create a short video maximum of 3-5 minutes long that will demonstrate an online teaching methodology/format of a nuclear topic/s integrated into one of the following secondary subjects – Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It can be in the form of a documentary, short story, music video, animation, and the like
    • Submission can be in local language with “subtitle in English”. However, all Q&A should be in English
  • Entries will be judged based on the following criteria for each subject of Biology, Chemistry and Physics which includes Nuclear Science component
    • Content (20%) – comprehensive, technically correct, and easy to understand
    • Impact (20%) – the video should have a powerful effect on the target audience (students)
    • Relevance (20%) – The video must be relevant to the objective of the competition to engage students to NST subjects
    • Creativity and Originality (30%) – The video must be original and visually stimulating

3- Timeline and Selection Process

  • Format: Submissions must be in any of these video format: .mp4 or .mov formats with the following preferred resolutions: video – 1080p, 30fps; thumbnail – 1980 x 1080 and max size of 20MB
  • Submissions can be done in CLP4NET. To learn more, please read instructions on how to submit video presentation on CLP4NET
  • For submission of entries, please provide us the link where the video is uploaded (could be private YouTube account or any cloud storage)
  • Submissions received by the deadline will be collected and reviewed for conformance to the competition rules, terms, and conditions
  • Valid submissions will be reviewed and scored by a selection committee comprised of IAEA staff and partner institutions of RAS0079
  • Top ten videos for each category will be notified for the finals where live/virtual presentation and Q&A session with the judges will take place on 25-28 October 2021.

4- Terms and Conditions 

  • Only one submission is permitted per applicant. Once an entry has been submitted, the applicant will not have an opportunity to revise it
  • Applicants must fill in the Applicants Form and attach School's endorsement, Passport or ID to proceed with the competition
  • Videos must be submitted by an applicant acting in their own personal capacity and not on behalf of an organization, company, or government
  • All submissions must be the original work by the applicant in their own words, except for quotations from published and unpublished source, which are clearly indicated and acknowledged as such. Citations must follow internationally recognized styles and applicants can at any time be requested to provide clarification of the source. Any content that can be identified as plagiarism will immediately be disqualified
  • Date of the study tour for the competition winners will be subject to travel situation

بخش بین المللی جشنواره ویژه دانش آموزان 17 الی 19 سال و دبیران دوره دوم متوسطه

قالب آثار ارسالی: ویدئو کلیپ بین 3 تا 5 دقیقه

موضوع برای دانش آموزان: کاربرد فناوری هسته ای در پزشکی و کشاورزی (به زبان انگلیسی)

موضوع برای دبیران: نحوه تدریس آنلاین با هدف ایجاد علاقه در دانش آموزان به کاربردهای هسته ای در فیزیک، شیمی و زیست شناسی (به زبان انگلیسی یا با زیرنویس انگلیسی)

جایزه: دعوت به اتریش و شرکت در بازدید علمی به مدت یک هفته در مقر آژانس بین المللی انرژی اتمی

مهم 1: این رقابت بین المللی است و از مجموع آثار دریافتی از کشورهای مختلف، در هر بخش 10 اثر به عنوان برنده اعلام خواهد شد.
